Bear for web, Android, & Windows
Return to support library
As of this writing, we do not have plans for Android or Windows. Shiny Frog is a small team by design, and we prefer to focus on projects we believe we can reasonably tackle and do well.
But!
We can say that Bear for web is in the works! We don’t want to talk specific features yet, but we can share a few of our current goals for its core design.
Our plan for Bear for web
The web version will be designed to complement the native Bear apps on Mac, iPhone and iPad, providing you with the flexibility to access your notes from any web browser. It is primarily for situations where you cannot access the native Bear apps and need to browse, edit, or search your Bear notes. It is not intended to be used as a standalone note-taking solution.
Our current plan is that Bear for web will:
- use Apple’s iCloud to sync your notes, which means it will
- still be private so we cannot see your notes, tags, or anything else
- require Bear Pro
- allow you to use the core features of Bear native versions
- access your notes even iCloud is blocked or banned in your working environment
- have a public beta once we get closer, but it’s still a ways off
- not have online collaboration for launch. We need to move one step at a time. After we launch Bear for web, we can revisit the possibility of collaboration
Limitations
Yes, unfortunately all technology has limitations. We are trying our best to minimize the difference between Bear Web and native versions. However, due to the limitations of the web apps and the exclusiveness of AppleOS functions, Bear Web will have some limitations compared to the full-featured native apps. Any OS exclusive features such as semantic search or touchpad gestures will not be working the same for Bear Web version.
It will take a while
Yes, really. The original Bear took three years to build, and now we’re also juggling the web app, customer support, and regular updates to support Apple’s latest features and fix occasional bugs.
Fortunately, Bear Pro subscriptions have allowed us to expand the team a little to help with support, social media, our growing Chinese audience, and commission those sweet, sweet iMessage stickers.
When we get closer and have more to say, we’ll update this document and proclaim it from atop the highest mountains. Whereby ‘mountains’ we mean our newsletter, Twitter, Reddit, and Facebook.
